Ray's 1977 Porsche 911S
History and the Donors

The car was delivered to its original owner in southern California. The second owner moved the car to Birmingham, Alabama in 1996. The car was repainted at that time, a bare-metal paint job that changed the car from its original green to the current black.

Engine one.

The Previous Owner replaced the original engine at 126,000 miles in May, 2001. I have the maintenance records, and can see why!

Engine Two.

The replacement engine, number 6149359 was taken from VIN number 9114112275, a 1974 Targa with a Sportomatic originally delivered by Forest Lane Porsche-Audi in Dallas. It had 89,700 miles on it at the time of the swap. The transmission lines for the Sportomatic were plugged. This is the engine that was in the car when I purchased it. I replaced this engine with a correct 1977 S engine.

The 74 engine is now available for sale. It is complete and runs, although it has a knock and low compression in cylinder five. Please e-mail for details; see home page for address.

Engine Three.

The current
engine was removed from this 1977 911S in California. The car had been in storage for ten years when the owner decided to start driving it again. After spending $1000.00 on adjusting the valves and other engine maintenance and installing new brakes, the car was totalled in a front-end crash just two weeks after it returned to the road. It had 37,000 original miles on it at the time.

The two-in/one-out muffler was transferred from Engine Two, the California EGR valve was removed, and the factory A/C compressor reinstalled at the time of the swap in August, 2001. The 74 had a different A/C mounting plate than the 77, but after obtaining the correct mount I was able to use the same compressor.

The new engine before (left) and after (right) the transplant. Note that the 77 does not have an eleven-blade cooling fan.
