MKI MR2 Brakes

The pre and post 87 brakes are different and here is some information you may find helpful.

In these pictures you can see the smaller early brake and rotor. The rotors are more massive and the caliper beefed up to boot!

The earlier brake is nice and not worrisome for most people but for track events the later style brake should be a great improvement!

Even the dust shields are different with the later brake sporting a vent and scoop to direct air onto the rotor.(see picture below for compasrison)

For comparison here are some pics of the rotors side by side. I am comparing used rotors because I did not have nay new rotors for the old style brakes and the comparison of new to old would have been unfair, though probably not misleading.

To further convince you of the advantage, compare the calipers.

Here is the best part. even though the suspension etc was "updated" this is a fairly easy swap.

All you need is a complete steering knuckle from a later car - it is a direct bolt in.

In this picture I have disconnected the tire rod from the steering knuckle, unhooked the brake line, unbolted the ball joint from the knuckle and removed the bolts holding the knuckle to the strut.

Now the new part just bolts right on. This is a good time to replace brake lines and ball joints if they need it.

This entire operation should take about and hour per side with proper tools. The parts from a junkyard should cost you less than $100 and the cost of new pads and rotors depends on where you buy them.
