28.09.2001 12:54 PM - While thinking about the kind of cool accessories we would want to add I made a stop at a few electronic stores. In particular I found a few items from Radio Shack Dot Com that peeked my interest. I am not a big fan of this store, but they do have a wide variety of kits that make it easier then producing your own PC boards etc.

The Searcher Radio Direction Finder - This has some very cool possibilities especially when you use it in conjunction with a FM transmitter. Combining the two can give you the ability to tune a FM transmitter to the same station a car around you may be listening to. It takes a little modification, but the theory is there. Now when the person in front of you isn't moving or turning the way you want, have the computer tune them in and tell them. No I don't recommend this but its a fun idea none the less.

Digital Tachometer - I love the good old mechanical gauges etc, but I want to interface to a computer. This little kit can give us the signal out we need to be able to feed it back into a A/D converter and then have the computer work out the details. This also gave me the idea of possibly being able to setup a mechanical shift system. Maybe years down the road you can set the mode of the car from standard to automatic or even eshift like they have in the Indy cars.

Parking Radar Kit - There are several of these kits out and around. They are called ultrasonic ranging systems. Accurat from about 30 - 44 feet. I'm thinking anti collision system (not that you would depend on it) but it might be kinda cool to make sure you don't go to pull into the lane next to you to only find out someone was in your blind spot. It wouldn't be very effective from a frontal point of view. The speed to distance ratio will kill any warning affects you could do by the time you hit 25 MPH.

Electronic Ignition for Cars - Please don't beat me, spam me, or hunt me down. I am a computer geek and I know that there are some top of the line igition systems. However because I am a geek and not a gear guy, I am more apt to try something like this, if for nothing else then to learn better. It goes in line with trying to figure out how to make a fuel injection card as well.
