About MAX914

Welcome to the MAX914 web pages. This site is about my 914, and MAX, the Linux Beowulf cluster of motherboards that is being integrated into the car. As a kid I guess I watched a little too much Knight Rider and so being the computer junky I am, this is a geeks dream project. Further, the 914 is the best and badest Porsche around (IMHO).

Anyway, the goal here is to marry two older eclectic systems to produce a thing of beauty, technology, while in a way using the idea of old or hand me down type parts still. Max is a Beowulf system of two or more socket 7 motherboards. They can handle only up to a 233 MHz Pentium MMX chip and 384 megabytes of RAM each. Currently each motherboard has a AMD K-5 133 in each of them, and at least 32 megabytes of ram in each. The main motherboard has a analog to digital converter ISA card in it. With 16 single ended connections, or 8 deferential.

To glue this all together we use Linux as the operating system due to the open source nature of almost all of its applications and software. Since we are talking about interfacing to the real world, we run the RTLinux kernel set 3.2 version to try to make sure we can maintain specified levels of service if we get into handling fuel control and delivery using the system.

I am a computer programmer by trade, and have had several years of electronics experience in both analog and digital. There are many pieces we would all probably love to have in a computerized car and in our own 914's and so I hope you not only find these pages useful, but if you have chance to contribute that would be even better. The technologies and software that we develop and ideas we can all put together could bring about some great innovations and a lot of fun.

Thanks for stopping by, and see you on the list... Rennlist that is!
