Does the underside of your hood look like this:

If so, you may be surprised to find out how easy it is to replace the insulation pads to make it look like this:

The pads get old and brittle with age. It looks ugly and tends to drop crusty pad dust/chunks into the engine compartment -- the last thing you want when you have the oil cap open, the intake manifold off, etc. I got the old pads off without a mess in about 10 minutes using a Shop-Vac. Drape an old sheet over the engine bay before you start, then just scrape the Shop-Vac nozzle over the padding. If your padding it brittle enough, like mine was, the pad just breaks up and gets sucked in -- with virtually no mess. You will then end up with nothing but some fuzzy adhesive under the hood, which comes with off with a product like Goo-B-Gone or Goof-Off (and plenty of patience). The new pads are self-adhesive. Just peel the paper backing off and stick them on. Couldn't be easier. You'll kick yourself for not doing it a lot sooner!
