Sharktoberfest 2008 - Oct 17-19, 2008

It was nice to see so many old friends at Sharktoberfest and make some new ones. It really takes a special effort to put this kind of event together, and I have to say that despite some of the organizers being called away at the last minute to take care of other responsibilities, it all went very well and I think most everyone had a great time -- certainly, the people I talked to were having a great time. Many thanks to Mark Anderson, Jim, Tom, and the rest of the 928 International crew, and to Carl and Connie for showing their wares, and to all of the terrific people that come to the event and make it worth attending.

We drove down on Thursday so Robin could meet with a client -- she had done a website for O'Malley's in Seal Beach, and we had dinner there Thursday night. the food was fantastic -- I highly recommend the fish & chips. We puttered around Friday, driving around some places where Robin lived, worked and went to school when she lived in the LA area. When we returned to the hotel, we found some of my shark's younger brothers & sisters out on top of the parking garage, and left them to get reacquainted.

There were about 10 sharks in the upper lot at this point, and 4 or 5 on the lower level.

Saturday morning early, the sharks that had been stored at 928 International were already out in the lot and several people were already there. That's Eric Mickleson in the dark shorts, not sure who the other person is.

Since I was pretty sure Brian wasn't going to make it, I snapped a couple shots of his just-purchased track car. It looks pretty stock at this point, with lights and AC stripped out.

Of course the rear interior is gone...

...as is most of the front interior. Fortunately the wiring seems mostly unmolested, so Brian can decide for himself what he does or does not need.

This gorgeous shark was for sale... great opportunity for someone.

Jim Bailey's "brown, very brown" 928 looks as good as ever!

I really liked this red/black interior with the white piping.

It's the people that make the event. Many good folks that I have come to know over many events in this pic...

I didn't figure out who the new owner of Joe Dyer's old car is... but they brought it to the event.

No changes that I can see since I saw it on the dyno at Devek.

Still looking great on the outside too.

Bill Ball came prepared to do some more burnouts...

Rob had his "blown Beast" there too, but he says he's had little time to drive it. I offered to take it out and keep the fluids circulated for him occasionally...

Looking sharp, sidemarkers filled in, fenders flared, ready for paint...

This was one sharp looking car. Very clean.

Unique set of wheels on this one...

I really like the blue on this S2.

Hmmm... I wonder why Connie is smiling...

...Oh, that's why she's smiling.

An interesting visitor...

This cab was a work in progress...

What had been finished was very nicely done. I'm not a big fan of the rounded wheel arches, but the work was top-notch.

After a few dozen miles across the valley freeways, we stopped to re-group.

Looking the other way up the line

We stopped for a while to take in the view on Heaps Peak. You weren't trying to say anything in particular by picking that spot, right Rob? Rob?

We stopped at a Mexican buffet restaurant for lunch. That's Erik hamming it up, Connie intent on lunch...

Bronto looking like he's happy with his lunch...

One thing though... I have to say something about the mariachi bands... that's right, two of them played while we were there.

The were pretty good as mariachi bands go... but dang were they loud! It was a little tough to talk at times, but it was all fun.

After this, we had to say goodbye and hit the road for the long drive home. It's always a bit of a wrench to put an end to the weekend, with so many great people there is never enough time. See you all next year, if not before!
