Sharktoberfest 2007 - Oct 19-21, 2007

Thanks to everyone, organizers and participants alike, for making this such an incredible event. 928 International, Joe, Dan, Mark, Carl, Jim, etc. etc. Thank you folks especially.

I arrived with a dead camera battery so didn't get any pics of the Friday night reception, but it was a very nice get-together in the bar at the Fullerton Marriot. The first thing that caught my eye at the event on Saturday was this CF hood that one owner was sporting. Not that I'm interested in one for myself -- it was just unique and I liked the way it caught the light. Too bad the pix don't do it justice.

Tim Dey's 200mph ORR racer was brought down from Tahoe for display.

Pretty good turnout this year...

For this event there was a varied agenda. Here is Dan Bise explaining the options, either hang out at 928I for the afternoon or go for a tour of Precision Motorwerks, Greg Brown's lair. I elected to go see Greg's shop.

Tough choice for many -- there was a lot of head-scratching going on.

At Precision Motorwerks, Mark Anderson's engine was sitting on a stand... here is a side shot of the drysump oil pan. And no -- it's not sitting on that cracked 911 rear end, it just looks like it is.

A shot of the scavenge pump that keeps the pan clear of oil.

A rare look inside Mark Anderson's CF intake.

A 911 with the squirrels dropped out of the back end for some rejuvenation. A nut transplant maybe?

A much more serious 911 - a race car in this case.

Sunday, we went out to Village Coffee Roaster's Euro Sunday event -- a loose get-together of folks with any and all types of cars, most of them European. I left my car in good company. I figured neither of these guys were any more into door dings than I am.

A better shot of the Z. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for first-gen Z-cars, because of my own experiences with one. Even if a little creative license is taken with the form, they are great cars. This one looked very well done, BTW. Not my taste, but excellent craftsmanship.

A nice old Packard... intersting hood setup.

Even rust buckets are welcome... well, some are...

Quite a variety of cars. When we arrived, 928s were in the majority. I count 12 in this pic; with my car to the immediate right, that's 13.

One of my dream cars, a big-block 'Cuda.

This one is a 440.

Nothing wrong with a Torqueflite -- I've had several and they are near bulletproof. The original pistol grip is nice to see, many were changed out over the years for Hurst or B&M setups.

The car has some rough edges - most noticeably on the rear fascia and the dash -- but overall this is a very nice example.

Something you don't see every day. Studebakers are fairly rare. Avantis even more so. But a convertible Avanti, in near-mint condition no less... first one I've seen up close. I believe this is a late 80's Kellog/GM F-body version.

A peek inside --

A look at the front.

Our fun drive was called off on account of wildfire. We had lunch in a windy little outdoor Mexican restaurant, then went our separate ways. As I headed north on highway 5, listening to radio reports of road closures due to wildfires, I saw an ominous cloud of smoke looming ahead...

At some points it looked like the fire was going to cross my path.

Fortunately, the fire had not reached the highway before I passed by, but it was close.

So ends anonther Sharktoberfest weekend. It's too bad about the wildfires, but everyone made it home safe and there's always next year!
