Targa Top Restoration

This page shows some before and after pictures of my targa top, which was expertly restored by Dan Petchel of Cars Inc

Before

After

This shot shows the front edge of the top and how it sticks up slightly in the center. Also, the entire front edge does not lay flat.

Afterwards, the front edge is flat.

Here's another shot of the front lip. This shows one of the small tears in the top where it folds. There's also one on the other side.

After the restoration the lip fits tight against the windscreen frame, as it should. The vinyl looks a lot nicer, too.

This is a shot of the rear edge. It clearly shows how the edge is raised up and not flat as it should be.

After the restoration, the back edge is just like new. I also replace the rear seal and repainted the targa bar cover, which made a big difference as well.

This shot shows how the headliner is falling down.

Also, the center pin in the rear is missing. I didn't even realize there was supposed to be a center pin until I was speaking to a fellow targa owner on the rennlist.

The new headliner is a lot thicker material than the old and is much tighter. Also the center pin has been fixed.

Here's a shot of the passenger window. For some reason, it seems as if the top is a little too wide and it makes the window bow out so it doesn't come in contact with the seal. I tried adjusting the side seal on the targa top inward, but it didn't have enough range to correct the problem.

This shot is a little blurry, but you can see that the window is now fitting tight. The problem was that I didn't have the window adjusted properly -- it was rolling up too far. This cause it to strike the seal too high and bulge out.

This shows one of the pins. The plastic covering has worn off.

Here's the restored pin -- just like new -- no extra charge.

This is where the missing center pin is supposed to go.

Here's the new center pin. No extra charge.

This shows the rear seal. It's cracked and deteriorated in a few places. I've got a new seal that I plan on installing when I send my top in for reconditioning.

Here's the same area with the new seal -- I also reupholstered the bar as well.

Another broken spot in the seal.

The new seal is much nicer. The top fits really tight, which means it doesn't rattle any more and it doesn't make any wind noise at all. The difference between the old top and new is unbelievable.

More seal problems.
