Pete's Porsche 914 Page
As I looked for a nice picture of my car to scan, I discovered that
I don't have a good, scannable shot.
In this picture, my 914 is ready to go into the body shop for rust
repairs.
Specifications
1975 Porsche 914 1.8 liter engine with AFC (L_jet) injection.
I bought my 914 in 1986 when I was looking for something sportier than
my AMC Hornet.
I found this nice '75 model with 120,000 miles on it.
It was my daily driver until 1989 when I moved from California
to Minnesota.
It now has about 168,000 miles on it, still running
on the original engine!
Rust Repair
In 1995, I decided to have some rust repaired and stripped the car
down to a roller for transportation to a body shop.
The pictures you see here are the "before" shots.
This case of rust "cancer" was mild compared to some pictures I've seen,
but I figure it's better and cheaper in the long run to attack it
before it gets any worse.
The shop replaced the rear floor of the rear trunk,
cleaned up some rust below the battery tray, welded in a new tray,
and replaced the rear trunk hinge pivot mounts,
and cleaned up some surface rust in the front trunk.
Reassembly
I got the car back home in November of 1995.
Unfortunately, I lacked time and ambition to work on it and it sat until
the summer of 1998 when I started working on it again.
At that time I:
-
Installed a front anti-sway bar (16 mm).
It is not connected yet as I don't have the tabs on the A-arm to
connect it to.
-
Installed bumpers, lights, horn, hood, and trunklid.
-
Installed front trunk felt, engine firewall interior sound deadening pad
and insulation backpad.
-
Tested all fuel injectors for spray pattern and flow.
-
Repainted and installed the gas tank with new fuel hoses and filter.
-
Replaced the rear wheel bearings and installed 5-stud rear hubs and 914-6
rear brake rotors.
-
Changed the transmission fluid (Swepco 201).
-
Installed the engine/tranny with new mounts.
-
Reinstalled and connected all the engine compartment bits and pieces.
-
Repacked and installed the CV joints.
-
Installed an Optima battery and started it up!
Still to Do
This year I hope to:
-
Install A-arm with drop link tabs.
-
Install 911 front struts with 911 M calipers.
-
Clean up and install the rocker panels.
-
Install an oil temp/pressure "combo" gauge and senders.
One of these years the 914 will need a new coat of paint -- especially
on the right side which was previously repainted with a poor quality paint.
