Rear Seat Delete (reversible)
This project was in my plans, but not necessarily for this
weekend. I was just cleaning out the back seats when I pulled one
up and almost threw up. It was gross under there. So I
thought about it, looked around my shop and had a few ideas.
My goal here is to have a completely reversible rear seat delete
project. I'm hoping that I won't have to cut or drill anything
and that this will be removable and I (or the next owner will be able
to just take out some bolts and screws and reinstall the seats to go
back to stock.
However, what I hope to gain is a split rear cargo area (inder the
platform) that will be high enough to strore the spare, as well as my
hydraulic jack, jumper cables, some tools and hopefully some additional
stuff. Where the rear seats are located will have doors to allow
access to another storage area where the stereo equipment and possibly
a fire extinquisher can go.
First, I had to figure out how to do this without cutting or drilling
anything.
As I was removing the rear seats I figured the best place to mount
things would be where the old seats were. I cut some angle
bracket and drilled it so that it would fit where the old seats bolted
into. (I even used the original bolts).
I leaned them back because I saw that I could get a straight line
(although tilted almost 45 deg.) from the top of where I want the rear
shelf to be down under the speakers to the floor. If I kept is
straight up, I think I'd have to do something with the speakers and I
don't imagine I'd gain much volume anyway. I also like the
idea of having this section swept back because I usually drive nearly
reclined, and it looks cool.
PIC 1 (angle bracket drilled and bolted where back seats were)
PIC 2 (Drilled hole toward front of bracket to give me a 'swept back'
angle and better shot lining up front under factory speaker)
PIC 3 (trimmed a piece of 1"x4" pine so that top and bottom meet up
with sides, bolted to cross piece)
Next, cut two pieces that will support the front sloping piece and come
up under the speakers.
