After being off the road for seven months (Nov. 99-June 2000) I finally got the 914 finished (mostly) and ready for the track.  The car literally moved under its own power for the first time on Friday 6/23 and we were at the track the next day.  If you're gonna break it in, break it in right!

In a word, AWESOME!!!!!   We did a home-brew alignment Friday afternoon using a t-square, tape measure and eyeballs (look, look, yeah they're leanin' in a LOT now), and the car handles incredibly well.  The engine pulls like a train and I was really able to chew up lots of bigger, faster cars.  I love this car!

First session on Saturday:  I took it real easy, just ran three laps and came in, making sure the brakes work, engine runs well, etc.  We had a minor problem with leaky valve covers until Blake realized we had way too much oil in it.  We pumped some out and it hasn't leaked a drop since -- not one single drop!

Second session:  I'm sitting on the grid and realize the tach isn't working.   Damn, must have bumped the wires on the Electromotive when we were checking it last time.  Oh well, I'm gonna run anyway.  I run about half the session, using the brakes a little harder and it's really squirming around.  Heavy braking is really upsetting it -- not fun.  I figure I'll just take it easy on the brakes til we get a chance to really check them over.

Third session:  I fixed the tach and added about a half-quart of oil.  It's burning a little and smoking off-throttle, but that's to be expected from a brand-new engine.  As the rings seat, oil consumption will go down and the smoking will stop.   I went out and halfway around the first lap the mirror falls off!  So I came back in and Blake ran up -- "What happened?" with a worried look.  I held up the mirror and he just laughed and grabbed a screwdriver.  A couple of turns and I was back on track.  This time I ran the entire session, pushing harder each lap and the car just got better.  The brakes are improving and the pedal is nice and firm.   It looks like the brake problem was just new pads and rotors taking a while to get bedded in.

Fourth session:  Picture-perfect.  I just went out and ran it hard.  The smoke went down, the brakes were rock-hard, straight and true, and the handling was great.   I had lots of fun keeping up with 911s, Boxsters, Corvettes, etc.  You know they just hate it when they can't catch me on the straights because I walked away from them in the corners.  I love that!

Sunday:  Three sessions just like the last one on Saturday.  I went out with Joe and Tim (two other 914 guys) and we played cat and mouse around the track with all the big boys, earning a black flag in the process -- they thought we weren't supposed to be out there for some reason.  The stewards apologized for the error and sent us right back out!  The only downer on Sunday was the last session got deluged by Noah's own flood.  I haven't seen it rain that hard in I don't know when.  I literally couldn't see when I was putting the tarp over the car because there was so much water hitting me in the face!

So what's left to do on it?  Passenger seat, carpeting, a little paint, new starter and a few small jobs.  Lots of little stuff that will take forever but wow I'm happy it's running so well.  It's been so long since I've driven it that I forgot how much fun it is!

DSC0023.jpg At the shop and we're almost ready to go for a drive.
DSC0025.jpg Blake takes it out.  This is the first time the car has moved under its own power in seven months!
DSC0026.jpg Coming back in and it's doing fine.
DSC0030.jpg Road Atlanta.  I'm heading into turn one.  This is about 100mph in fourth and I just barely slow down for the turn.
DSC0033.jpg That's Joe Ross.  He's built his car for the same class I have, PCA-I.  Lewis Broyles has helped him out as much as Blake has helped me.   A really nice car that runs great.
DSC0034.jpg The only way to go.  Two 914s, a truck and a Winnebago!   The RV belongs to Lewis and he was kind enough to let us use it all weekend.   Really nice when the track temps are pushing 150 degrees!
DSC00035.jpg A really pretty early 911.
DSC00036.jpg An original 914-6 in that same dark blue that Lawrence just bought.  Rick McClure just bought this car last week and this was his first outing in it.  Very nice car.
DSC00037.jpg Another original sixer, this time in silver.  I saw more 914s at this event than I ever have in the past.  That's good!
DSC00038.jpg Is that what I think it is?
DSC00039.jpg Yes, that's a 2000 996 Twin Turbo.  Damn, what a car!   I talked to the owner and he said he just picked it up on Thursday and it's the 24th one built.  I gotta like a guy who spends $120k on a car and takes it to the track two days after he picks it up!
DSC00040.jpg Another shot of the turbo.  I really like the aggressive looks of the front end.  Porsche should have done this with the 996 in the first place.
DSC00041.jpg I love the paint on this 944 club racer.  The woman driving it was really nice and loved to talk cars.  I need to find someone like this!
DSC00042.jpg 1.7?  Uhhh, take a closer look at those tailpipes.
DSC00043.jpg Yep, it's a sixer.  A 3.2l conversion that really goes.
DSC00045.jpg I'm not sure if this is a genuine RS, but a very pretty car nonetheless.
DSC00047.jpg TJ the Viper killer!  That's TJ Minarcine, local hotshoe.  At the last PCA autocross we invited the Viper club to join us and six Vipers took the challenge.  Imagine the looks on their faces when this little Japanese sedan beat ALL of them!  This was his first DE and he was really enjoying himself.
DSC00049.jpg 914 mood shot.
DSC00050.jpg A genuine 904 decided to come out and play.  That's right the real thing, not one of those abominable kits.
DSC00051.jpg George Hussey in the famous last 914-6.
DSC00053.jpg Two different theories on 914 exhaust.  Joe has the stock heat exchangers going into a Bursch collector and a Supertrapp hanging out the right side.  I've got a rather unique header with a Pete Weber muffler.  Let me tell you the sound is incredible!
DSC00056.jpg This is what happened just before my last session on Sunday.   Unbelieveable.  It was like a hurricane.  When I took this picture, I was standing inside the RV, not daring to open the door, soaked from head to toe, while the monsoon raged.
DSC00057.jpg Equippe Litherland, packed up and headed for home.
DSC00058.jpg Home sweet home.
