December 26th 1999

Today we are going to start by removing the thermostat.

I took the bolts out and we all knew the housing wasn't going to seperate. With a plastic mallet I was able to break it loose.

Ok! for all you guys who aren't sure. This is what the thermostat looks like and this is the direction it goes in (in this case, comes out).

Next project. They have said the gasket below the breather is a leak source.

So off it comes, too easily I must say.

Look at what you can see through the breather port. The rods for the two front cylinders are visible. Is this the source of the breather/oil problems that plague the early motors. Should there be a baffle or screen in here?

I put a piece of cardboard over it to keep from dropping anything in.

On to other things. I cut the timing belt off to get it out of the way. I'll measure it and let you all know how long it is.

Decided that I needed a challenge. I took off the water pump without taking off the crank shaft damper. It wasn't all too tough. All the bolts came out. The only thing not good is that one of the bolts is 1/4-20 thread. I am going to chase all the threads with a tap. Anybody know what I should put on the bolt threads? I don't like anti-seaze, maybe an anti-corosive.

I finished up the afternoon by cleaning up the top side of the engine and prying off some more sound deadening. I have decided to take off the left cam tower and replace the gasket. What the heck, it's only December 26th.
