Engine

18 August 2004 As the engine was smoking badly after startup, idling and decelerating I figured the valve stem seals might be the problem, I took the car in for a top end overhaul. Not only were the seals worn but so were the valve guides some of them had 2mm play. The local agents told me the did not have guides but could import it, this would cost ZAR130 each and take ten days. I told the engineering shop we had to wait ten days, fortunately he asked me the price and after I told him he told me its ridicules, he could make them at about ZAR30 each - which off cause he did and two days later the head was ready for reassembling. While in there we re-galvanized the exhaust covers, and powder coated the cam belt cover and other items. We also had the tappet cover and intake manifold painted.

Fortunately the starter motor made funny noises the day before I took the car in so we had it rebuild while it was assessable with the exhaust removed.
