The Porsche Hunt
(Written in 2004)

This all started back in the '80s when I lusted for a Porsche 911.  I've liked other exotic cars over the years but the 'affordable' 911 has always been a favorite.  I almost bought a brown '82 Coupe in 1990 but I backed off at the last minute.  This was fortuitous because I would have had to live in it six months later.  Fast forward to 2003 & the passion was relit with the onset of my middle-age-crazy period.  I started thinking about getting a Miata & thenI realized that I could actually afford an '80s SC or Carrera.  So, the hunt was on.
_____
I travel a lot for business (consumer electronics sales see http://www.audioplusservices.com/) in the Southeast US, which is fertile Porsche hunting ground.  Carolinas to OK & everything south.  I also included anything within a 10 hour drive from Toronto, Ontario Canada (home).  FYI older Porsches are rare & expensive in Ontario.  I saw several cars at local dealers that were embarrassingly decrepit.  The prices seemed to range about $5K CDN over comparable US cars.  An Auto Trader Canada search turns up the same 10 cars in Ontario month after month.  Hence the search south.  Insurance & tax issues convinced me that I needed to ship it home rather than drive.  And crossing the border requires major wallet vacuuming with approximately 19% added in taxes & duties before it parks in your driveway.  And not to forget currency exchange.  Cue Oh Canada here . . .
_____
My initial attempts at buying a Porsche 911 turned into crash and burn events.  Six months of research followed by six months of calling, emailing, viewing & driving had resulted in three failed PPIs (Pre Purchase Inspections) and many, many tire-kicking viewings.  All told, I researched over 30 cars.  The highlights:
_____

1987 Carrera Coupe
Marine Metallic
109K miles Asking $18000
Florida

One of the 1st cars I looked into, so of course, I wanted it badly.  I loved the color.  Peppered with stone chips however.  In the pics, I saw the glue from the missing engine mat & thought it was rust, so I ran away.  I learned the truth later, but the stone chips would have kept me running.

1985 Carrera Coupe
Guard's Red
76K miles Asking $18000
Connecticut

Great PO.  Knew his car & had tracked it.  I went back & forth on this one for 2 months.  A Rennlister  sent it for PPI & he told me the results - time for a clutch!  Not wanting a $1500 bill for my new car, I walked.  And it was red, you know, really, really red.

1988 Carrera Coupe
Slate Gray
82K miles Asking $21000
Manhattan
This one I came very close.  I had negotiated him down to $19K & was heading for a test drive.  It needed tires & had some minor roughness & it was serviced at "Joe's Garage" which did not instill confidence.  I got cold feet & cancelled.  A Rennlister drove it.  The seats were so-so - not like he said.  The clutch was so-so - not like he said.

Oh, but I loved the color . . .
1987 Carrera Coupe
Guard's Red
102K miles Asking $17400
Birmingham Alabama Area
Nice guy but I could not get over the redness.  I know, I know red is a great color.  But not for me.
1985 Carrera Coupe
Polar White
90K miles Asking $18000
Birmingham Alabama Area
This guy was desperate to sell.  Maybe too desperate?  Also a lot of mods had been done - exhaust, wheels etc.  Another "Joe's Garage" special too.  One of the few POs that actually followed up though.

1985 Carrera Coupe
Prussian Blue
61K miles Asking $18000
Texas
Beautiful car.  Checked out by a local Pelicanhead & he gave it a thumbs u
p. But in PPI it failed leakdown & compression in 2 cylinders.  Even surprised the wrench.

I walked. $120 spent on PPI.
This car was bought by a local guy who proudly posted pictures until he found out about my PPI results.

1988 Carrera Coupe
Dark Blue
94.5K miles Asking $17000
Florida

I arrived after dark so I looked at this one with a flashlight.  It stunk of gas & oil & even in poor light I could see a badly repainted rear panel, lunched seat etc.

I ran.

1987 Carrera Coupe
Silver
102K miles Asking $18900
Ohio
Another one I was back & forth on.  He talked the talk & walked the walk. I offered $18K which he refused.   I got sucked into the car below & missed this nice one.  Sold for $18.5K

1988 Carrera Coupe
Lagoon Green Metallic
95K miles Asking $18375
Florida Panhandle
A good repaint & a great Linen interior. Failed leakdown & compression
in 1 cylinder and iffy on another.  Another surprise ending.

I walked. $200 spent.
This guy accidentally sent me some racy 'personal' pictures rather than car pictures.  Boy was he embarrassed.

1985 Carrera Coupe
Prussian Blue
95K miles Asking $19000
Florida
An RoW in Florida.  PO was a bit of a dick & I smelled some issues with the car, so I drifted off to the car below.

1981 SC Coupe
Hellblau Metallic
68K miles Sold for $18500
Long Island
The owner, a Rennlister was particularly fussy, so I had high expectations.  Billed as a 'near perfect' SC, this one was really nice but had some persistent oil leaks.  The wrench (the POs - I know, I know . . .) didn't do a compression or leakdown as I requested.  I also had qualms about the complication of the CIS.  I reluctantly (but un-regrettably) walked. $300 spent.  Bought by someone local to the PO.  They got a nice car.

Undaunted I persevered.  Along the way, I gave up on coupes as I drifted towards an open top.  I also decided that red (too cliché), black (too evil) were out as was brown (too dated) and cassis (too . . . well . . .).  As you can see above, my 1st choice was one of the many shades of blue.  I also realized that buying a 15+ year old car was not easy.  Many have been neglected & owners tend to omit any & all problems until you ask (or point them out).  I decided that from here on in, I was always going to see & drive the car before it went to the wrench for a PPI.  I had spent over $600 & still didn't have a car.  But I kept looking . . .

1984 Carrera Targa
Moss Green
93K miles Sold for $16500
Upstate New York
This car convinced me that I had to go topless.  It rattled & shimmied and had a really vague gearbox, but with the top out it was a blast.

I passed however due to the declining condition. $0 spent.  Bought by someone local to the PO.

However, a Targa just didn't cut it for me.  I just couldn't get past the styling and the top issues.  I researched a couple of others, but my heart wasn't into it.  A Cab was the obvious answer, despite the northern climes that I inhabit.  If I wanted topless, why not go all the way?  It's a summer car either way.

1984 Carrera Cab
Polar White
110K miles Asking $19900
Tulsa
I was in Tulsa on business & a local dealer had this on Trader.  The sales guy showed me how the top worked & parts fell off while he did it.  Hahahaha.

Bye bye.

1984 Carrera Cab
Slate Blue
108K miles Asking $28900 CDN
Toronto
This car needed 1st gear syncos + much more. The salesman said "Just dump the clutch.  You'll love the way it drives"   It was well-flogged with 5 or 6 owners.  But it was my 1st Cab drive & it confirmed my direction.  Great color.  Another pass on this POS. $0 spent.

1986 Carrera Cab
Silver
96K miles Asking $19900
Massachusetts
Another ROW.  A lot of work had been done the previous year.  He wouldn't budge on price & something just wasn't right with this one.  I also couldn't arrange business travel & it was a long drive down.  I drifted.

1984 Carrera Cab
Polar White
98K miles Asking $17900
Upstate New York
Another guy that was desperate to sell because he was going back home to Yeman or someplace.  A little too eager I thought, so I split.

And finally . . .

The ad on autotrader.com:

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera Cab

Mint cond, 59.8k mi, wht, blue top, Navy leather, new top,
60k miles check up completed, new AC, $20,000

I suspended looking for a while and that is when the '87 Cab above kind of dropped in my lap.  I was in Fort Lauderdale & had a free morning.  I had printed an Auto Trader ad for this car in Pompano Beach, thinking that I wouldn't have time to see it.  I called & discovered that it was lady-driven & still available.  It had been driven to FL from CT where it had been a weekend toy for its original owner.  I dealt with his wife as he was out of the picture - no, I didn't know the story.  He leased it from new and plated it in NY where he had a business.  At the end of the lease they bought it to keep as a weekend car.  She had transferred title to her name in January (more on this later) and drove it down to use at her condo and but decided to sell it to buy an SL500.  She was selling it because "I'm too old to drive a Poorsh.  I can't shift it anymore because of my hip".  She knew next to nothing about the Porsche marques but then most owners really have no clue.  Her loss, my gain.  And the car was only ten miles away from my hotel.

When I went to see it, she tossed me the keys and disappeared to the local mall with her daughter & grandkids and told me to call her when I brought it back.  Trusting soul.  I loved the look and . . . it felt right and drove right.  The G50 transmission was a revelation after the sloppy 'agricultural' 915s that I had driven.  I drove it for an hour in a light rain and fell in love.  I was ambivalent about white and the Carrera spoiler was a little over the top but it drove right.  I sent it to PPI and two days later the wrench said it was a buyer.

The numbers:   cyl 1 182 / 5% cyl 2 179 / 3% cyl 3 179 / 2% cyl 4 180 / 2% cyl 5 180 / 5% cyl 6 180 / 5%

Finally.  An engine that was good.  A transmission that was good (no fork upgrade but no need at this time).  And no oil leaks.  Reasonably well maintained, but nothing major had ever been done except a replacement top.  It needed tires, brake rotors & pads.  It had some small paint blemishes and seat scrapes.  It also needed the front spoiler for proper aerodynamics.

As a side note, another buyer looked at it the day after my PPI (but before we had settled on a price) and he called the wrench for the results.  The wrench told him to get lost, that I had paid for it and only I could get the results.  Kudos to Felix at Gulf Performance in Pompano Beach.  An honest mechanic!
