Ride Height Adjustments

(Written Fall 2004) & (Added to Summer 2005)

Along the way, I had been fiddling with ride height.  Since I'm sticking with 15in Fuchs, that presents a challenge.  The original 'balloon' tires were 195/65 & 215/60.  Well, these tire sizes are rapidly going dodo, so after much research, I decided on 205/55 & 225/50.  The same width as popular on 16in but with a smaller wheel & overall diameter.  So, I start at least 1/2" shorter.

I scoured the net sites & BBSs looking for pictures of 15" Fuchs & tire size & ride height details.  Pretty slim pickin's.  Some guys are riding really low.  24.5" in the front & 24" in the rear.  This looks cool but it is retarded when you scrape EVERY time you back out of the driveway.  Oh, well.  Higher I go.  25.25" for now & 24.75" on the OK side.  OK side, you say?

Yeah, it looks like a torsion bar resetting is a very early spring project.  I could not lower one side and/or raise the other to match.  About 3/4" difference in the rear.  So I'll attack it in the spring.  I'll probably combine it with shocks & Neatrix spring plate bushings.  I know, Elephant Racing Polys are better.  But, they're not stock . . .

So it stays at this height & I will do a proper setup later.  Angle of spring plate etc etc (see 911 Spring Plate Angle Calculator ).  I am also determined to try my own alignment using the Home Alignment of the 911 booklet that is available from Ray Scruggs.

Front height adjustable bolt.  Easy to access & easy to adjust.  But if you bottom out, you must reset the torsion.  Just remove the bolt & pull out the torsion bar cap & re-position.

Rear height adjustable eccentric.  You need a special thin wrench to get the nut at the back.  Loosen the clamping bolt & the eccentric & adjust.
Only about 0.75" adjustment here.

Summer 2005

Finally set.  Front height is approx 25 1/4" & rear is 23 3/4".  Pretty low & I have been scraping on occasion.  But it looks good & rides really well.  Very stable, no drift at all.  Kind of starting to feel that 'on rails' feeling that I have heard about.

Note:  Since I am using Boge front shocks, the general consensus is to remove all or part of the rubber bumper that is on the shock under the dust cap.  No one seemed to know how much to cut, so I whacked off 2/3 & just left the top 1/3.  Now I can feel my front shocks again.
