MAF Mod

(Fall 2006)

The MAF mod is not really a proper mod but more of a cheap & dirty refurbishment.  The wiper inside the MAF etches the circuit board traces that it rides on as you use the accelerator over the years.  The object is to shift the wiper slightly so it moves on an n0n-etched portion of the trace.  The ultimate goal is a quicker - or like-new - accelerator response.

Remove the airbox & unbolt the MAF.  It's not hard.  The black plastic cover on the underside is glued onto the body with some adhesive.  With a fine flat blade of some sort, pry up the cover.  Just move around the end gradually & with patience, you can get it off without destroying it.

Inside the MAF you will find all of the scary stuff above.  Don't worry, you won't screw it up.  In the photo, you can clearly see the etching on the trace on the left side of the photo.  The contraption in the middle pivots on the orange-colored shaft in the middle.  It can be moved slightly - up & down the shaft.  This is your goal.  By shifting the contraption's position on the pivot it will reposition the nipples on the wipers vis-à-vis the trace.  So, just loosen the bolt with a Phillip's driver and carefully move it.  Try to feel where it is & move it up or down to a different position.  Then retighten the bolt.  Re-glue the plastic cover & reassemble the MAF & airbox. & reassemble.

You're done!  Now go out & drive it & experience the massive improvement in throttle response.

My insights:

I did it.  It was seriously easy.  But I didn't really feel a real improvement.  But it can't hurt . . .
