Clutch Slave Bleeding

(Spring 2008)

This is actually just an extension of brake bleeding & it is just as easy . . . except you need monkey arms. And a Motive pressure bleeder or a home brew equivalent.

Get the car up. You will need your Motive attached with suitable fluid in it. Have a 3 ft section of clear bleed hose & a drain container under the car. Reach in & remove the rubber cap from the bleeder. Attach the bleed hose. You will not find this easy because access is very limited. Crawl under the car, reach up & use a 7mm wrench to open the bleed valve. All by feel of course.

I would suggest using the closed end - put it on before you attach the hose. If you use the open end - like I did - it will slip off & you won't be able to close it before a quart of fluid has drained & your Motive is empty. Then, you will have to refill & do it again with the closed end so you can stop it in time - like I did. Amazing how evil the fluid looked. I had bled the brakes twice before without doing the clutch slave. Now I will do it every time.

After some net discussion (Pelican's John Walker), I decided that the small dribble that the Motive produced wasn't a good bleed.  So I did it the manual way.  Get your wrench on it & crack it open.  I found that the weight of the wrench actually closed the valve so I propped it open with a rag.  Then, swiftly pump the clutch pedal a number of times & leave it in an UP position.  Then, quickly close the bleed valve.

It works fine.
