Porsche 944 Turbo #1 Projects Page

The engine in 944 Turbo #1 decided to lock up during a recent head gasket and oil cooler change so I had to pull the motor to find out what was causing it to lock. Once I pulled the oil pan and started to remove the pistons out the top it was obvious what had happened when I reached the #3 piston. The piston ring in the #3 piston had broke causing it to score my #3 cylinder pretty bad. Lucky me when the engine locked the car was being cranked over by the starter motor only and did not cause any other damage. Overall however I was pretty impressed with how well the engine looked with closer diagnostics of the other parts. The other cylinders were in decent shape and had light scoring on them; pretty good I think for a car with almost 200,000 miles. The pistons for the other cylinders were also in good to excellent shape with light scoring. The rod bearings however had some wear to them do to the antifreeze oil mixture while driving but probably still could have gone another 20k before changing as the damage wasn't that bad. The oil pan was extremely clean and the crankshaft journals looked good as new. Looks like all I need is a good bore job (crossing fingers), oversized pistons, and assorted bearings. Below is some pictures of the disassembly process.

Bad Engine!

Man that turbo is tiny....need to upgrade SFR Stage 1?? :)

Where did it go?

My parts bench.

More parts.

Ouch..

$$$$$.$$

WISH LIST

Basically the above is what I think is needed down to the bare essentials of what needs to be done to make this engine last like the last one did. This engine will probably get a MAP or MAF upgrade down the road  and maybe see a turbo upgrade as well, so planning ahead to replace as many internal parts with new ones is wise.
