Cassirot Stereo Upgrade

Prepping for the upgrade

Simply put the sound system in the 928 is a bit dated and needs a serious overhaul. I wanted a upgrade that looked factory and also sounded good. Unforuntely finding some replacement speakers can be difficult as the factory sizes are not very popular. The rear speakers are 6" bass drivers and the doors house a 4" mid ranges along with a pair of tweeters. The first thing I did was to take some size measurements of the rear speakers and found I could fit a 6.5" in the factory housing with not much effort. I than took some measurements of the front speakers and found I would stick to the factory sizes of 4" mid bass drivers along with more modern tweeters. I didn't want to modify the factory door panels so I kept with the factory sizes up front.

Purchasing the equipment

For the rear speakers I went with a component set from Infinity. I choosed there Kappa line which included a 6.5" bass driver, crossover and tweeter. The rear speaker locations aren't exactly the best setup for most speakers so a free air speaker would be best. I speced a few drivers and decided on choosing a driver with a VAS (drivers suspension rating) rating of at least .4 or higher for a stiffer suspension which would allow it to operate like a free air speaker. I also purchased some poly fill to help fill the rear speaker locations which would help to seal them. I decided not to use the tweeters with this setup as I was looking for low end bass from the rear speakers. For the front speakers I needed a very efficient and skinny (not deep) speakers so they could fit in the factory locations. I went with a set from Diamond Audio as on paper they met my needs and the price was right (around $120). The Diamond Audio D343 speakers fit nicely in the factory location and there is no need to drill more holes for them to fit.

Installation

Plan on a full day for the installation because you will need every hour to get this all done. I started at about 8am in the morining and got her done at about 8pm that night. Installation was fairly simply up front and only needed to modify the factory tweeter locations for the new tweeters to fit. I took the original tweeters and punched out the center than mounted the new tweeters in the opening. I then screwed the factory tweeter housing to the the door panel and fed the new tweeter through the location. I didn't worry about using the Diamond Audio hardware to hold the new tweeter in place since I would be placing the factory cover top of the tweeter which would apply pressure to the tweeter and hold it right where it needed to be. Again I was going for that factory look so I decided to modify the factory tweeters to fit with the new tweeters.
The rear speakers on the other hand were some what time consuming to get fitted as I wanted to use the factory housing to mount them. The first thing I did was take out the old speakers and remove them from the factory housing. In order to get my new speakers to fit nicely using the factory housing I needed to cut the factory speaker ring from the old one. So I fired up my air compressor and used my cutter to cut (see pics below) away the factory ring so I could use it on the new speakers. Once I got the ring cut out, its simply placing the ring over the new speakers and mouting the speakers in there factory housings. Below are the pictures I took during this upgrade and should help, if you decide to upgrade your 928 sound system.

Some of the new goodies

Good riddance 20 y/0 stereo

I removed the seats as I was re-wiring the speakers as well.

Remember where these connections go!

Pulling the new cable through

I had to pull up part of the rear seat and some of the carpet in order to get his speaker cable good and hidden so take your time!

Yep, theres speaker cable under there.

I routed the cable beside the seat rails.

These are some cool connectors I found on parts express. They are bullet connectors that are water tight. Just heat them up to seal them.

Starting the speaker installation

Starting to cut the factory speaker ring from the basket.

Success!! Factory spreaker ring removed

Getting ready to install speaker ring onto new speakers

Speaker ring almost installed

I broke these mounting bases in half so I could use them as ears in order to hold the factory speaker ring agains the new speaker which will secure it to the factory housing

New speaker installed in factory housing using the method above.

Speaker installed in housing

Wiring up the crossovers

Filling the rear speaker locations with poly fill.

Rear speakers installed. Never would know there is a modern speaker in there! Exactly the look I was going for!

Front Speakers

Removed door panels to install speakers.

Midrange speaker fits in factory location! Makes the job easy, so no need to drill new locations!

Installing tweeter

Don't worry about the tweeter mounts that come with it as the factory grill will press against the tweeter base and hold it in place.

Wiring the speakers to the crossover. I used double sided tape to mount the crossover to the back.

Front speakers installed
