Front Seat Removal

Okay, okay. I can hear you now already sayin' to yourself...'what Bozo can't get the Front Seats out???'

Well, me for one - at least not efficeintly (translated = quickly). Since so many cabin pentrations require an easy field for access (like Center Console Removal and Instrument POD Removal) - this seems to be a good candidate for discussion (Hey Bob - I can remove that seat in 3 notes - uhhh, minutes). Seriously though, hopefully my experience here may help those who haven't earned the T-Shirt yet.

The Front Seats are held in place (at least my '87 S4) by 6 bolts. Loosening a couple of bolts, followed by seat movement, removal of a few more bolts, and then finally removing the first couple of bolts makes the job easier and faster if done in the right order. Front Seat removal is a snap after that. No messing around, no scratchin' your head - and besides, you really want to get at that naggin item that really needs your attention - which means let's get goin'!!!

Where to start??? Well, where your seat is naturally! Starting from there - move the selected seat all the way forward

(what??? your switch/motor is broke??? use the manual method then!!!) This can easily be done (you did eat your spinach today....didn't you?) using a 6 inch extension with a

Loosen (don't remove) the bolts on either side using a 6 mm hex socket like the one shown below.

If you don't have power available, it's gonna take some more time - use the 4 mm socket to position the seat first! (see pic below).

Now run the seat all the way to the rear and remove the front bolts. Keep in mind thast once you get them broke free, you'll have to hold the 'square bolt' portion while unscrewing the bolts from the seat brackets.

Now run the seat forward just enough to access the rear bolts. Complete removing them.

Carefully pick the seat up while slightly tilting it toward the 'tunnel' of the car.

Once the seat has been picked up, lay it against the Center Console. Un-plug the seat belt warning sensor wiring (hey...this can be a tough monkey to undue).

While picking up the seat, rotate it outward towards the door and pull slowly out from the car. You should hear the seat motor wiring disconnect. If NOT, then place the seat in a comfortable position and free up the offending wiring connector.

Holding the seat as shown, tilt the seat back towards the tunnel while pulling the seat outward in a smooth motion. Then exit the car with the seat.

Then transport the seat to it's temporary storage location (hey...the Living Room or Den makes a great place for this - uhhh, just kiddin' Hon :) while you get at what you really want to work on!

Hope this helps!
