RUNNING REPORT 5
BACKGROUND:
- It was decided that a full service on
the car be performed given that the car had not been fully serviced since
purchase.
- Whilst the car was in for a major
service, it was decided that the minor leak from the valve covers be fixed.
- At the same time, it was noted that
the gear change, when compared to similar 964's, had an excessively long
throw, and the entrance into each gear felt somewhat spongy. The Technicians
were also asked to check this, as a result.
WORK DONE:
- A full service, consisting of oil
(Shell Helix Ultra), transmission and brake fluid change, oil, air and fuel
filter change, replacement of battery water and spark plugs was performed on
the vehicle.
- At the same time, a number of items
that had been bothering me were changed, including the replacement of the
headlamp lenses (SGD56 per piece) and the change to a 964 RS rear bumper
(SGD650 plus required light fixtures and painting at SGD220).
- The gear change was attended to by
the changing of the shift rod, gear bushes and associated coupling (total
cost SGD150).
On the left is the engine under side with cover
removed to aid cooling. Note the oil free engine! On the right is the replaced
bottom right hand cam cover.
- To fix the valve cover leak (caused
by deformed valve covers), replacements were obtained on all 4 valve covers
at just over SGD500 for a complete set (uninstalled). These were made of the
updated post 1992 material, and hence should not deform so easily in the
future. At the same time the rear engine cover was removed in order to aid
cooling of the engine (a very important change given the start and stop
traffic of Singapore).
- The total cost of the service (and
all parts mentioned above) was a wallet busting SGD3,400.
POST SERVICE SYNOPSIS:
- Gear change is now spot on, no leaks
from the valve covers and the rear RS tail is a treat.
- I have, however not yet tackled the
remaining oil leaks on the oil pipes.
