Grant Steering Wheel and Security System

(Thief's View)

Since the only mounting kit for a 911 is a billet unit that will not work with the security hub, I thought I might be stuck. As it turns out, I was able to mount the hub to the stock system and all I had to add was 3 1.5" x 1/4" bolts and six nuts. The only modification I made to the Porsche parts was to cut off and solder the horn wire.

To do this, start by pulling the ground cable to your battery, remove the horn pad, large nut behind the steering wheel, and then the wheel itself. Flip the steering wheel over and remove the mounting hub. Pull the contact ring (three screws) unit off, then unbend the tabs and pull the actual ring off of the plastic base. Clip the horn wire off of the base, removing all of the tab that extends toward the driver (Plastic and Metal). Solder the wire back on to the ring so that it is at a tangent to the ring (on what's left of the tab), and replace it back into the plastic base.

Debur the steering wheel hub with a file, so that the new bolts fit well. Transfer the hole pattern to the mounting bell of the security system, drilling VERY CAREFULLY! Make sure there is plenty of metal where you are drilling. The hub will not go back on in the same position it came off in, but that's OK, I'll cover that. Run the bolts through the back of the hub to the front. Place the first set of nuts on the bolts and tighten. Replace the contact ring so that the turn signal tab is near the proper location. Mine was close enough to use the extra holes that Porsche drilled into it. Feed the horn wire through a convenient hole and through the hub where it originally went through. Place the bell onto the hub, and use it as a reference while installing the hub back onto the steering stem. Remove the bell, install the steering hub nut and tighten down hard. Mount the bell using the second set of nuts and make sure to feed the horn wire through the center hole. If you want, you can cover the gap between the hub and bell with electrical tape.

Finally, assemble the security system and steering wheel as per the factory instruction.

You can find Grant stuff just about anywhere, and it is sure a lot less expensive than some of the other brands. My wheel cost $99 (Leather Momo look-alike) and the Security System cost $109. All I need now is a horn button with the Crest on it...
