Door Pocket

There is a minor flaw with the door pocket design of SC and Carrera 911s. In a nut shell, there is a screw just inside the door pocket that affixes the plastic pocket structure to the handle structure. This single screw places two different loads on the plastic pocket structure:

1.) When closing the door the momentum of the pocket wants to move inward, thus vertically splitting the plastic.

2.) Closing the lid (or using the pocket lid as an arm rest) drives the plastic down on the screw, which can break off small pieces of plastic already split by #1.

The upshot of all of this is that the screw hole in the pocket can (and will) split and the plastic above the screw can get chipped away. The fix for this is relatively easy. The first step is to find a marine supply store and procure the following:

To do the repair:

  1. Clean the repair site with laquer thinner.
  2. Cut 2 pieces of the mat so that they both cover the front and back of the pocket's repair site.
  3. Clamp the pocket so that the split closes but you still have access to the repair area
  4. Put on the gloves and mix up some of the epoxy.
  5. If some of the plastic is missing, separate out a small amount of the epoxy and thicken it with the filler.
  6. Epoxy the first patch on the interior side, place the mixed filler in any gaps, flip the patch over to the exterior side and finish epoxying. Be sure to fully encapsulate the fiberglass mat and work all of the air out from underneath the patch.
  7. Once the epoxy has set up, but is still tacky (~20 min) lay down the second patch in the same fashion.
  8. Let the pocket stand in the clamp overnight.
  9. Drill out the fiberglass for the screw.
  10. Reinstall the pocket.
This fix costs less than ten dollars and can save you a very expensive doorpocket.
