1967 911 Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing #916

I've raced in the Rocky Mountain Vintage Racing ( www.rmvr.com ) club since 1996.  The club holds races at a number of venues.  The primary one is Second Creek Raceway just outside of Denver.  We also  race at Pueblo Motorsport Park in Pueblo, CO, La Junta Race Track in La Junta, CO and at Pikes Peak International Raceway outside of Colorado Springs.  I've also raced at Heartland Park in Topeka, KS and did a TracQuest DE at Buttonwillow in California.

RMVR used to race in the streets of Steamboats Springs, Colorado on the Labor Day weekend.  This was one of the premier vintage street races in the country and would draw cars from throughout the US.  It was run for 15 years, beginning in 1982 and ending in 1998.

As you can see, I've added a front fender oil cooler.  Club rules prevent the Porsches from putting coolers in the front center.  I had to cut out the headlight bucket to get enough air into the cooler to make it really effective.  Track temperatures in Colorado can easily reach over 100 degrees in the summer.  I would see runaway oil temperatures in a 15~20 minute session.  I burned out a motor prior to installing the oil cooler.  The heads got so hot that the spark plug rubber rings melted to the valve covers.  The car behind me is being driven by Rob Whitacre.

A really cool picture from Steamboat, 1996, the year of the Porsche.

Another series of special races that RMVR has held are charity events called the Freedom Gran Prix.  The first four years that they were held, money was raised for Freedom Service Dogs of Colorado.  These are dogs trained to assist people with mobility problems.  They can be trained to pull wheelchairs, turn lights off and on, open doors, etc.  The club has raised over $230,000 for Freedom Service Dogs.

In 2001, the charity that will be benefited by the race has been change to KIND.  Kids In Need of Dentistry.
