R Gruppe
Gathering: North meets South May 5th
weekend would prove to be a historic meeting of early 911's
from Southern, Central and Northern California in this small
central California coastal community. Organized by Chris
Huergas (North) and Freeman Thomas (South), R Gruppe is a
loosely assembled group of early and diverse 911 owners who
have a common interest in modifying, converting and
rebuilding early 911's for "sport purposes." There were
estimates of approximately 70-100 early 911's (1966-1973)
present this weekend. Many were original or finely restored
versions while an equal number were modifed versions, some
lightly, some drastically. There were a few race cars in
attendance as well as a few genuine (and rare) factory RS
models. This was not a concours event as most everyone, save
for a few trailered race cars, drove their vehicles to the
event. Still, the cars represented were the best "drivers"
of this vintage this writer has ever seen at one gathering.
There were cars who ventured from as far north as Washington
state to the southern borders of California. One owner made
the trek in his race-sprung track car from Las Vegas,
Nevada. One observer accurately commented there were more
early 911's here than at the Monterey Historic races in 1998
which had featured Porsche's 50th year anniversary and many
hundreds of Porsches in attendance. The weekend
contained 3 loosely structured and relaxing segments. Friday
afternoon turned out to be a parade of early 911's arriving
from various destinations into Cambria. The unofficial
gathering spot was the parking lot of the beautiful San
Simeon Resorts which overlooks the Pacific Ocean along
Highway 1 (just south of the famous Hearst Castle). As each
car entered the parking area they were greeted by
appreciative stares, nods and smiles from other owners.
Person-to-person
interaction was the emphasis this afternoon as everyone
ogled the assortment of early 911's from every direction.
Questions and answers flowed like good wine. Speaking of
