The Targa rollbar on my car was in need of a new coat of paint so I decided to sand it down and refinish it using a satin black enamel. Rather than pay for a paint shop to do what I considered a minor touch up job like this I used a can of commercially available enamel spray paint. I figured if I screwed it up bad enough I was no worse off than before and I resort to the paint shop.
Nothing ventured - nothing gained !
After wiping down the rollbar with paint thinner to remove all of the wax I sanded it lightly to roughen up the surface for good paint adhesion.
The masking was easy - the paper slid into the weather stripping in the front of the bar and the rear is a straight across the top and down the side.
The Targa emblems on my car were attached with adhesive so dental floss and careful prying removed them without a problem.
One more piece of masking a beer break and we're off to the races. The beer was for courage You try this with your Porsche and see how many it takes !
After removing the masking tape and paper the rollbar looks good with even coverage and a smooth appearance. I let this dry for a week before finishing.
The completed project after using white rubbing compound and a good coat of wax. Total cost for this project - $9.50 and about an hour. (and 6 beers)
All the masking done - courage at an all time high I begin the spraying . I sprayed the outside edges of the bar first then two light coats and let dry.
I applied two coats across the entire bar and let it dry for about an hour. I applied the final "wet" coat ensuring even coverage over the surface.
