Thermostat Installation

The Mocal thermostat used in this application is different than the Porsche OEM unit and required a little explanation to understand how it works. It is a very simple design and very effective and also provides the ability to hook up your hoses in a straight line.

When the oil is cold, it flows from the engine to the thermostat and because of the high viscosity of the oil in the lines going to the cooler it takes the path of least resistance and flows through the open poppet section in the center of the valve and back to the engine.

As the oil is heated it increases the temperature of the thermostat causing the center poppet section of the valve to close, directing the hot oil through to the cooler. The oil goes through the cooler and returns to the engine through the lower portion of the thermostat

The hoses enter the rear wheel well after being routes through the rocker panel.

The thermostat was installed "in line" directing the hoses over the top of the wheel well.

Engine Plumbing

The original configuration has the oil line going directly from the engine to the oil tank.

The existing lines were tough but not impossible to get off. I used a propane torch to heat them up to make it easier.

You have to be very careful with the line that comes from the engine. Use a second wrench to prevent twisting  the hard tubing.

With the old line removed I cleaned up the fittings and put some anti-seize on the threads to protect them.

You will need to use 30MM to  -12AN adapters on the engine fittings so that you can attach the hoses. These are available from Pelican Parts.

With the adapters installed I attached the -12 hoses that have standard AN fittings on them.

With a 45 degree drop in temperature, this project brings a new meaning to my license plate !

I used 90 degree elbows to route the hoses over the top  of the wheel well, rather than by the side of the tires ,because the hoses came too close to my fat tires for my comfort.
