What better way to spend a Sunday then with cools cars and nice people? This was accomplished on May 13 at Mid-Ohio. The local region in which the event takes place organizes the particular Club Race. In order to put on a club race, volunteers are needed. I saw a couple of calls for volunteers in our local newsletter. I decided to contact Jim Stoops of Mid-Ohio Region to see how I could help out. Mid-Ohio region was still in need for volunteers for both Saturday and Sunday. I decided to volunteer on Sunday since EBR was having a Rally on Saturday. Jim requested that I show up at 7:00 am to help with registration. This was not an easy thing to accomplish. Seven o’clock in the morning is early for me and I would have to leave Akron around 5:30 am.
Well, I got on the road at 5:40 and showed up at the front gate at 7:00, right on time. I located Jim Stoops and he asked me to help out at the front gate for 30 – 45 minutes as cars streamed into the race course. After helping with getting people to sign the waivers, I went back down to the garage area. Jim informed me that I would be helping with timing and scoring. I was responsible for making copies of the previous session’s times for the racers. It might not have been the most glamorous job, but it was an easy job in which I could watch the cars race across the start/finish line.
The first warm-up session started at 8:00. The first qualifying session started around 9:30 and the first races started after lunch at 1:00. During the lunch hour I walked around the paddock area and looked at all the cool race cars. I actually was asked by a guy (Ken Lubell) to help with installing his camera mount on his roll bar. I had never met Ken before, but he handed me a wrench and asked if I could install the mount in which he was having difficulty installing. I accepted and installed the mount. He was grateful, but wouldn’t let me drive his 911 RS America.
The day of racing concluded at 4:30 with
the Group 1 cars (race prepped 911’s) finishing their race. It was
an outstanding day at the race track. I had a good time and look
forward to helping out at future PCA Club Races.
