The Early Days

914 LF Quarter

Feurig the 914 came into my life in January 1999 (more on the name later). I had decided that I wanted a 914 for my first restoration project after reading the article about mid-engined sports cars in Grassroots Motorsports sometime during the summer of 1998. For months I searched the Internet and the classifieds, but 914s are a bit scarce around Baltimore, relatively speaking. I checked out a few examples without much luck. One '73 2.0 needed some fairly complex electrical and rust repairs and the owner wouldn't budge on his $5500 price. Another time I went to see a '74 1.8L and it was beautifully restored--quite a bit too nice for me, without even a garage to store it in. Finally, a fellow from Alexandria, VA (just south of Washington, DC) saw my want ad on the 914 Fan Club page and e-mailed me about this 1974 1.8L that he had. I wasn't optimistic: it had carbs, which I didn't want; it had sat for almost two years; and the guy was going to *give* the car to the Salvation Army just to get rid of it.
