JUSTIFICATION
It really bothers
me when people call the 914 a NARP (Not A Real Porsche) just
because of its VW heritage. In my opinion the 914 is a highly
underestimated car, and in many ways is superior to the 911.
Everyone knows the 911, not to many recognize the 914. Why not?
Lets analyze some reasons why the 914 is better then
presumed:
- It has a
classic sports car design, having the engine in the
middle.
- Handling is
superb, and certainly was one of the best handling cars
ever back in 1970 upon its debut.
- Tremendous
success was achieved in the racing circuit.
- A 1974 911
would take a 74 914 off the line, but that same 911 would
have its hands full with that 914 on the track.
- Many special
models were derived from the 914, specifically the
916(which was the fastest accelerating Porsche in its
time) and the 914-8.
- Ferdinand
himself was presented one of only two 914-8s built for
his 60th birthday.
- Porsche knew
that if they put bigger 6 cylinder engines in the 914,
these cars would kill the 911.
- Good
condition 914s are becoming exceedingly rare, valuable,
and collectable.
- The 914
excels in its respective arena. Being that it is a very
fun, good handling, open-air roadster that is now
appreciating in value and slowly becoming recognized as a
classic of automotive engineering.
About 2% of my
decision to buy a 914 went into consideration that I could
actually proclaim I own a Porsche. I bought it because its fun to
drive, and I think that it is a gorgeous car. I would never buy a
911. Im not sure Id even buy another Porsche at all.
But I love the 914 and think that its just the greatest car
Porsche made. NARP? I beg to differ my friend.
Notice the focal
point is the on the 914s, and the 911s
are in the background.
