I did this on my '88 and it's a bolt-in swap. According to the Information Technik for the '89 GT, the shifter is 20mm shorter than an S4 shifter and shortens shifter travel by 10%. Installation can be a pain because the springs around the pivot points are hard to compress and there isn't much room to work. I compressed the springs in a vise and then kept them compressed with dental floss until the new rod and circlips were installed. Then just cut the dental floss to uncompress the springs. -- Jim Stadter '83 928 S 5-speed (U.S. spec) '88 928 S4 5-speed http://members.rennlist.com/jstadter Lone Star Region PCA (Austin) 928 Owners Club (http://www.928oc.org) From: 928 SPECIALISTS [p928sp@928gt.com] Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2000 3:47 PM To: 928 Subject: [928] Re: Buy a GT shift Rod for an S4? Just in case here is the part # 928.424.067.50 > Has anybody ever checked on this? Need I ask? Many times. > they quoted 35.00. It seems (damn me for saying this) - low. Yes, Porsche retail is $51.50 , they have have priced a shift rod cup bushing instead. It is difficult to say who did it first - Mark Anderson cut down a shift lever over 10 years ago . Just keep in mind that as you shorten the shifter it becomes harder to move . And the shift gates get closer -the 2-3rd path is closer to the 4-5 path so it is easier to down shift into the wrong gear . Be sure to get the GT shifter lever 928 424 967 50 - about $50 Porsche list , the Dealer probably quoted you for the standard lever the 067 11 for about $ 32 .
