Subject: [928] Heat in auto shift knob area

The metal shaft running down from the shift knob in my 86.5 auto sometimes 
becomes very hot - almost too hot to touch. The rest of the console in that 
area also becomes warm, although not nearly as hot as the stick itself. Is 
this normal, or something I should be concerned about?

the foam sound block /seal on top of the central tube is probably letting
hot air from the cat. conv. percolate up around the shift lever this can get
worse if the motor mounts are collapsing and the engine driveline move away
from the body letting more air bypass the foam . It is not the way it was
meant to be .
