It's into the triple digits & I'm driving the hell out of it, so that's a reasonable test. I just changed the ignition switch, and the AT shifter cable.. Yeah, the shifter cable surprised me, too...but apparently, it had stretched to the point where it would shift into Park, but not activate the neutral safety switch...pretty funky. The shifter cable was an ordeal unto itself. A new one runs anywhere from $170 to $295. For a FREAKIN' SHIFTER CABLE...one that melted in one place -and- stretched. No doubt as a result of it's robust design, there are no serviceable used ones to be had. Used ones aren't available at any price, as the consensus is that they're almost always broken to some extent. Rotten plastic strikes again. ** WARNING ** Blasphemy Ahead: So, a trip to Kragen, and $39 netted me a B&M cable with the same hard points, eyelet end on one end, threaded on the other. Only iffy part was the section that holds the housing solidly to the shifter assy...a right angle bracket & a few bolts took care of that... The thing shifts the way it's supposed to, and will probably outlast the Porsche part. I can not remember -ever- having to replace an AT shifter cable on my hotrods...and the 928's cable had been melted & shredded & patched back together for at least 3 years...it was a previous-previous owner 'fix' that I was afraid to touch... Next on the agenda is the THROTTLE cable... Oy..what is it with these things? I have about 3/4 throttle with foot to the floor...at least that's only a $100 cable. Don't worry, I'll go with genuine German parts on that one. -Chris 1985 S (the S is for Starts!) From: C. The model I used is a B&M 4 foot cable, #80604. There may be others that work, as well..but that's what I used. I found it at: http://www.bmracing.com/catalog/fullline/fl99-23.htm My local Kragen will order B&M parts...so there we are. Don't bother mentioning what it's for...you'll get blank stares. The stock cable on my '85 was 41 inches long vs. 48, but that actually allowed me to route it a little further away from the exhaust pipes which ultimately did the last one in. It took a little adjustment to make things work, but it was worth it... -Chris From: Wally Plumley [wplumley@bellsouth.net] Sent: Monday, September 04, 2000 8:47 AM To: 928 Subject: [928] Re: Auto GearBox Gear Selector Cable Change At 04:24 AM 9/4/00 +0000, Colin Hughes wrote: >Hi >Can someone tell me (in general) what parts to remove to replace the above >cable. > >928S Euro Auto 1981 1) Remove ground cable. 2) Remove shift handle and rubber boot. 3) Remove cover frame.
