Please bear in mind that these are merely observations and have no relevance to support any sort of market report. During my search I kept track of things like mileage, 5-speed/automatic, color combo, VIN # and asking price. The information was gathered over the period of a year and in most cases, I do not know what the cars actually sold for. Obviously, some of the information is at this point dated. There are 80 GTSs in my sample and represent almost every car that has been for sale over the course of the last year or so. Breakdown by year is as follows: 1993 928 GTS - 35 (20 5-speeds, 12 automatics and 3 don't know) 1994 928 GTS - 24 (12 5-speeds, 12 automatics) 1995 928 GTS - 21 (10 5-speeds, 11 automatics) If Bruce Anderson is correct and there are only 482 GTSs, my sample means that approximately 17% of all GTSs built for NA were for sale within the last year. In terms of average mileage, the breakdown is as follows: 1993 928 GTS = 48,496 miles 1994 928 GTS = 32,733 miles 1995 928 GTS = 20,324 miles To further break it down into averages for 5-speeds vs automatics: 1993 - 5-speed = 44,311 miles (hi 87k, low 12k) and automatic = 64,346 miles (hi 118k, low 8k) 1994 - 5-speed = 24,626 miles (hi 49.7k, low 9k) and automatic = 40,840 miles (hi 115k, low 15k) 1995 - 5-speed = 18,800 miles (hi 40k, low 2k) and automatic = 21,710 miles (hi 42k, low 7.7k) Asking price averages, breakdown as follows: 1993 928 GTS = $41,077 1994 928 GTS = $47,995 1995 928 GTS = $57,256 To further break it down into averages for 5-speeds vs automatics: 1993 - 5-speed = $42,023 (hi $52.9k, low $34.9k) and automatic = $39,687 (hi $48.5k, low $26.9k) 1994 - 5-speed = $51,300 (hi $69.5k, low $36.5k) and automatic = $44,359 (hi $54.9k, low $29.9k) 1995* - 5-speed = $57,825 (hi $69.9k, low $49.5k) and automatic = $56,688 (hi $62.9k, low $32k**) * Does not include the Lime Green/Purple GTS (2nd to the last built) that sold at Champion in FL for $74,900. ** This car has a salvage title. Some other interesting observations about color combos and equipment. The strangest color combo was a 1993 GTS that is Wimbledon Green with Olive Green leather piped in Matador Red. The colors didn't even come close to matching. Original MSRP was over $100k! Some obvious things like, 38% of the cars in the sample are Black. Other quite popular colors appear to be Silver, Red, White and Midnight Blue. Some unique colors are Cobalt Blue, Horizon Blue, Iris Blue Metallic, Amethyst Metallic, Coral Red Metallic, Lagoon Green, Tahoe Blue and Speed Yellow. Almost a majority of the really unique colors seem to have been the first GTSs built in 1992 and most of them have 5-speeds. Two of the GTSs in this sample have had their engines replaced by PCNA. A word of caution, watch out for the Lagoon Green car (VIN WP0AA2929PS815085) I mentioned. My SO and I flew to Philli to look at it only to discover that it had been wrecked, bad. This car has an entire new front clip that was poorly installed and the paint job was even worse. The owner claimed he had no knowledge of the work. I could tell that the door had been painted standing five feet from the away and the spoiler had hair in the paint all this before I even started to really look at the car. If you're looking for a real unique 1995 or even a 1994 GTS, chances are you are not going to find it. If you remember at the very end of the 928s product life, Porsche had a hard time selling them. I paged through a couple old issues of the du Pont Registry and saw ads for 1994 and 1995 GTSs listed for sale at dealer invoice and below. Several ads were for 1994 models late into the 1995 calendar year and 1995 models late into the 1996 calendar year. 5-speeds too! Seems not many of the cars were ordered and more likely dealers had to take them so they were built with the bare minimum in terms of options to keep the price down. Thankfully, the 5-speed was a no cost option so there are a few of them. I also believe that many GTSs are still with their original owners. When it comes time to part with them some will take the time to learn the market and sell them for market value others will not and someone will get a great deal. I have talked with both. If you, like me, have to have a manual transmission and if the percentage of 928s that were manuals is correct, your choices really narrow. The number I've heard most is that approximately 30% of 928s were equipped with 5-speeds. Again using Bruce Anderson's numbers there would be approximately 88 - 1993 928 GTS 5-speeds, 30 - 1994 928 GTS 5-speeds and 27 - 1995 928 GTS equipped with 5-speeds. Would haves, could haves (well maybe not on that one) if it were only 1995 all over! Again, I offer this information because I thought some of you might find it interesting as I did. Hope you enjoyed reading. Happy Holidays. So at this point there are surely less than that, and by the time I start looking seriously I wonder how few there will actually be? >> Bill and all, Very good point. James Morrison and I have been discussing the actual number of 928 GTSs. In the Excellence article, Bruce gives the number I used of 482 total GTSs. I like James have always heard there were only approximately 300 total GTSs brought to North America. The 1993 928 GTSs have two separate series of VINs. One series ends with PS815xxx and the other with PS820xxx. From what I can gather, the series that ends with PS815xxx were the cars built in 92 as 93 models and the series that ends with PS820xxx were the 93 models built in 93. I actually have two 93 GTSs, one with PS815 and one with PS820 that both end with 125. Bottom line is if the number is really 300, there is something less than 145. Can anyone shed any light on this one?
