US/Can/Japan models - 32v Type 43/44 Euro models - 16v, BUT in very late production a few sneaked out with 32v Engines (type 43/44 with no cats). I have personally inspected one and heard of a few others from reputable people. I can only assume they ran out of 16v Euro S engines towards the end of production Australia Models - 32v Type 45/46 , also designated as "Prepared for unleaded fuels" (lower comp ratio of 9.3:1 vs 10:1 for type 43/44) All always with Porsche production and info - YMMV (Hi Ed :-) David Roberts 928 SPECIALISTS Phone: (828) 766-9280 Fax: (828) 766-5098 Website: http://www.928GT.com or www.928.cc E-Mail: 928@928GT.com Proud owner and driver of these 928s: 90 928GT 5-Speed Schwarz(Black)/Schwarz 89 928GT 5-Speed Schiefer Metallic/Schwarz 85 928S Euro 5-Speed Indischrot/Schwarz PCA Member - Carolinas Region 928 Owners Club - http://www.928oc.org From: Robert Voytcheff [goattail@telus.net] Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 3:21 PM To: 928 Subject: [928] Re: 85-86 US vs Euro Rick, Perhaps I can clarify the issue a bit. In 1986 German buyers had the option of having their cars equipped with catalytic converters. The one without cats had 4.7 16v motors. If you really wanted to have a factory cat equipped car, you were given the 5l 32v motor with 9.3:1 compression engine. My 86 Euro S 5sp is one of the 5l 32v engine cars (M28.45). Having owned a 84 Euro S 5sp in the past, it seems that the performance is similar. Power delivery is different, however: the 32v seems to have a fatter torque lower in the RPM range vs. the high RPM rush on the 16v engine. The state of tune on the 32v euro engine seems similar to the one on the US models, but the Euro S 32v engined car seems faster (2.73 rear end) and seems to breathe better (different final muffler). The Euro also appears to have louder exhaust note. I hope this helps. I haven't been able to find any > external differences between the US and Euro 5L. The difference is internal since the US Type 43/44 is 10:1 compression and the Type 45/46 is 9.3:1 compression. According to Porsche they use different pistons ( the part number is different). Heads and valves are the same. > But you are right, why wouldn't they install cats on the 4.7 Euro motor and > marked it this way in Europe.
