To everyone who has sent us congratulatory comments on our feat this last weekend, thank you for your kind words and support. It means a lot to us as did the support from all who attended....Don, Brad, Carla, Woody, Sprout, Cheryl, George, Jim, Richard, Dave, the Bundts and many other non-928 owners! The competition was tough, but the TEAM 928 drivers and navigators were tougher! We were noticed and respected as a team to contend with.... watch out corvettes! 928 owners get ready for next year..... On Sunday, we put the 928 into the records books and became the 4th member of the 200mph club by posting two radar/speed trap reading of over 209 mph! And as cool as that is, what is even more impressive, is that we did it in a vehicle that we drove to the event, runs on pump gas (although we did add 4 gallons of very expensive 104 to our 91 for safety...just in case), went really fast and then drove home with not one single problem! We were not the most powerful vehicle there as we made only 450 hp on the DynoJet, however we acheived the third fastest trap speeds.....first was Rick Doria in the Corvette 221?, followed by Dave Golder 217 in the Tony Stewart #20 car. Each of those cars had over 630 on the ground and they were "trucked" in to the event and had a full support team! We spent the first 20 or so miles just feeling out the car and getting an idea of the rate of acceleration in the ranges of 170 - 190 to help us determine a good corner exit speed for the corner exits leading onto the straight where the traps were located. The first third of the event we drove conservatively, and then came the "corner" which we entered at a conservative 165, accelerating to close to 175 for the exit and then full throttle ...180...185...190..193...197... 200...201...203...205...207...208...209... and then I just backed off the throttle and held it at 209 ish . We accelerated up to 209 faster than either of us estimated, in fact, it occurred in under 20 seconds! And the traps were still another few miles down the road! So we held speed and then immediately backed off to a safer 180 mph. Could we have gotten to 210 or 212...yes, but not that day. We used the same strategy for the second radar trap..got up to speed and then held it steady. BTW, 209 seems twice as fast as 200......which seems twice as fast at 180...etc. It is like we spent the whole event setting up for two corners and two striaghts! The White Cars performance was flawless. We tweaked the suspension settings to push the onset of the over steer component to beyond the 210 mph....it was difficult to do since the down force of our wing was an unknown (adds rear stiffness) and we had limited testing on the practice road. The DEVEK high tech suspension gizmo worked perfectly! But all systems worked synergistically and the car handled ideally. The quest for the record year is not yet over, next weekend at the Silver State, Susan will again attempt to break her own world record run and bring the 928 into the record books again. And as usual, we could use the support of the 928 community....so come on out, lend a hand and become part of setting the 928 into the record books... again! Oh, did I mention the RUF CTR...we beat it! Warmest Regards, -- Marc M. Awesome! Just wanted to let the list know that the 928 was VERY well represented at the Pony Express 11, in Battle Mt. this past weekend. Just a short note, maybe someone that was there with a camera will put up some shots and give more detailed report, We were 8 (maybe 9) strong on the entry list, and the same on the finishers list. I think more than 10 or so other cars did not finish. The competition was amazingly close in most of the divisions, for example, in the 150mph class, where I ran with Navigator Marc'Big Dog' White, there were 12 cars, and the finish times for the first 5 went from 150.034mph for the winner to 150.510mph for 5th place and 1st through 9th all finished within a second of each other. Everyone in 928s finished well, many entering in thier first race. Brad and Carla from Deveks took a second in the 145mph class in their first race in an 83s, just for an example. Who needs a steenkin' GT! The biggest congrads go to Marc and Susan Thomas who became members of the elite "200MPH Club" one of the smaller clubs in the world, consisting of people who have driven over 200mph on a public highway. And best of all, they did it in a 928 that they drove to and from the race, from San Francisco, and drive daily around town. Reaching those speeds in any type of car is an incredibly difficult feat, taking the utmost skill, courage, patience, etc. etc. etc. all of which Susan and Marc showed when they accomplished something that fewer than 20 humans have done. Great job!!! Marc and Susan and everyone else. Good to meet everyone Don Hanson
