Sounds like leaky injector seals letting false air into the combustion
chamber.  My guess is it's time to rebuild the injectors or at least 
replace the seals.  I had the same type of behaviour with my 86.5 in 
the mornings.  Felt like the car was holding back until the pop.  Kind 
of like the beast was clearing its throat.  Rebuilt the injectors and 
was like having a new car.
