All I can say is WaaaaHOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Love the sound... Anyway on to the data...Louis wanted to get a set of base runs on the car to see the effect of the x crossover. Some details first.. 87 S4 AT with 133000 miles on it. First Dyno day run (Feb 2000) with only a RMB 242 hp and 230 torque. Missed the torque peak due to the tranny kickdown during the run.. Added an Autothority chip and Adj Fuel Pressure Regulator for the second Dyno day in Sept 2000 (plus Nology wire and quad four plugs). Took care of the kickdown problem but the dyno shut down at 200 mph so the results showed 228 hp and 277 torque.... Cause -- RPMS not at HP peak (data from 5750 rpm). Needed to vindicate myself since the data has been compiled and my S4 was sitting near the bottom amongst the S cars.. Now I know something isn't quite right since at the bracket drags with the same equipment I ran a 14.24 1/4 mile.....? besting all but the mighty white GT of (of course) Louis Ott...... So I got the car strapped on the dyno at Toms Performance in Vancouver for some baseline runs... This time the car has all the above plus newly flushed fuel injectors (old ones ranged from 45cc to 65 cc at 50psi) and the fuel pressure was set back to stock (previously at 65psi). Also Louis let me borrow his new Porsche Air filter since my K&N was a little dirty... We were basically following the procedure outlined by Marc Thomas where we collected four back to back dyno runs and tossing out the first one. The run was done in 3rd (since we all now know that the 2.2 rear end allows for greater than 200mph!!). So after a little rolling on the dyno to warm up all the running gear, Tom gives me the sign and we collect all the runs...I get out of the car to check the results and ........................................................................................................................................................Best of the 3 was 274.5 hp!!!!! and 293.5 ft/lbs!!!!!! I am so stoked at that point... Wow was all I could say... I was about to tell Louis I didn't need to put on the x crossover...... but we broke for lunch to let things cool off.... and then came back to put his system on.... Louis did a very nice job. His jig was set up for his car and he constructed the pipe without even seeing my car.. It fit on the car with no major adjustment required....A very nice piece of work Louis!!! Anyway, this X crossover is 2.5 inch down to the existing system (approximately 2.25). I kept all the stock 87 S4 Cat back system (for now anyway).... Get back in the car and run it so it warms up a bit... Lots of smoke from the fresh pipes burning off. Kind of unnerving seeing the car shrouded in smoke and all the techs looking over. but once the car was warm Tom gave the signal and we did the 4 runs again...... What a sound....Just an awesome note!!!!!! Oh Yeah you guys want to know what it produced... well.... As I mentioned to some people out here in the Pac NW I was trying to squeeze out 300 ft/lbs to the ground on my AT S4 ..... well I am there......!!!!!!!! the best results are 284 hp and 302.2 ft/lbs.....and I definetely felt it on the ride home......much snappier response... wants to keep pulling so much so that I almost got into trouble on the way home ;-).... So I almost gained 10 hp and about 9 ft/lbs. I will post the charts on my site once I get them scanned.. One thing to note...my torque peaks occurred at 3000 rpm and the subsequent dip (flappy) dropped about 25ft/lbs before recovering (prior to the x crossover). With the crossover, this dip is less pronounce equating to more area under ther curve and quicker recovery after the flappy kicks in..... I will let you all know when I post the data.... Thanks again Louis for an awesome piece of pipe work!!! Wow I am so Stoked!!!!! Didn't even listen to the radio on my way home, just the sweet sound of an awesome 5 liter.... Later, Tom midlman@seanet.com vindicated at last............
