Done 4-5 miles, feels more responsive. Curiously the Voltmeter seems more stable - less fluctuation? Glitches - centre front belt cover - I missed the tensioner bolt that goes through the cover, and did it up first, then the cover went on later. Thinking about what's involved in fixing that??? Left the LH top belt cover off so I could watch everything on startup, looks like it will be fun to get in - not going to try while its hot. May have to remove the heater hose briefly. Things nobody told me to watch for (this is 16V remember):- Drain the oil first - you will have to remove the oil filler adapter on the front of the pan to allow removal of the front cover, and the oil will well up out of the hole. Then you need to cover the hole to stop water from pulling the water pump, and other debris (pump gasket) from getting in there. Also remove the dipstick tube and plug the hole. Pulling the alternator is not that bad, but getting it back up is another ball game - none of the bolts want to line up, you need to remember which of the three different lengths go where on the brackets to the lower crankcase - one of them tried to cross thread on me, and it took a few tries to get it to go in straight. Watch the reassembly sequence if you do the front crank seal - took me a few do/undo tries to get it right:- seal rear lower belt case rear belt guide washer crank belt drive wheel little plastic guide thingy with it !@#$%^&*( circlips oil pump drive wheel belt and timing fit tensioner roller/arm - bit of a PITA single handed, but can be done front belt guide washer front centre belt cover - with bolt that goes through water pump damper, pulleys etc, nut@200 ftlb Is it just me and my car, or are most of the belts a bear to get on? My alternator is a real PITA, power steering not much easier, AC also painful. The only easy one is the fan/smog pump. Previously the RH cam was off 1/2 tooth, and LH was dead on. Now the LH is still dead on, RH is down to 1/4 tooth, so it came up pretty well. Checked the torque on the cam bolts - ok, and they are 10.9s. Anyway, she started first try, after a week on stands, sounds good. The old belt is not really bad, just too many edge cracks, and miles to risk any longer. I suspect something has been done in there before, as there was no gasket on the tensioner, and I suspect a lot of the dirt up front was due to leaks there. There was oil in it still, the boot was just going hard. Now to clean up, go for a spin, and see if anything falls off or leaks. I hate disturbing things like water pumps that aren't leaking, but needs must. Thanks everybody for your advice and help along the way - I would never have tackled it otherwise, and the books are pretty useless on a 16V. Dan's Notes on 78-84 belts was very useful, reminding me about the 'missing' pump bolt that wasn't. John Pitman Riyadh 83 Euro S A/T White/white 42K Mile 74 Rover P6 97 LR Disco
