I've got one that's been puzzling me for a while. Since I bought my car (82 5 speed) last year the passenger side mirror will only travel up and down. When I push the switch to the right or left it will go up and down (maybe down and up - can't remember). Anyway, I found that if the passenger door is closed really hard, it will function perfectly for a little while (like a minute). All the while the driver's mirror worked flawlessly until yesterday. My initial guess is that it's a gear thing and not a switch thing. But now I'm not sure. A friend who has an 82 S has the same problem on the passenger side. Anyone else BTDT? Thanks. -Andrew 82 928 5 Speed Andrew, There is only one motor in the mirror. The difference in direction right and left is based on polarity. The difference in up and down is a solenoid that changes the drive gear on the motor. So if side to side is working but not up and down it is not the motor. The small switch switches power to the motors on the mirror. The solenoid is not switched. When you move either mirror up or down you should be able to hear the solenoid in both mirrors click. The directional switch takes care of reversing polarity and feeding power to the solenoid. In one horizontal and one vertical position the polarity is positive in the other two positions it is negative. The mirrors have a round connector in each mirror behind the glass. The cable passes through the door and into the wiring harness at the side kick panel. It is common for people working on the 928 to remove the mirrors by clipping the cable at the door and reinstalling it with butt connectors. If closing the door changes behavior I would either look behind the mirror for corroded terminals (unlikely) or under the mirror base for a bad repair job. Installing speakers can cause problems if the harness gets damaged. It is common for people re-routing the cable for the mirror to feed it improperly though the door causing the window contact or abrasion. The other place problems occur is the directional switch. Of course if this were the case you would see the same behavior on each side. The switch can be cleaned with DeOxIt or in the extreme if you are patient taken apart and cleaned. I have never seen a mirror that had a burnt out motor. I am sure it happens, but given the quantity available at your local Porsche wrecker it looks like there is no shortage of mirrors. The same mirror was used on most models of Porsche and not limited to the 928. Hope this helps. Dan the Pod Guy Portia's Parts
