Perhaps a different description might help get the headlights up - Look for a round cylinder (about the sixe of a small drink can) mounted almost vertically in front of the radiator/condenser. Pull the rubber boot off the upper end, exposing a round notched knob. Turn the knob until the headlights come up. Although, if your headlights won't come up, the first thing to look at is the link that drives the lights. Look in front of the radiator and find the round bar that runs across the car. Look near the right end (as you face it - left side of the car) and find the vertical link that hooks the drive motor to the round bar. This link should be retained by two E-clips. If the clips come off, the link can fall off. By the way, it is a very good idea to check these clips pretty often. If the wrong one falls off, you can drive the link thru the condenser or the radiator ($$$! - plus a tow!). The head lights in my 1983 come up normally but, only come on about one out of 5 or 6 times. I have tried resetting the relay and tapping on it. There must be a switch some place that tells the relay that the lights are up. Can anyone help. The "switch" is a rotating copper segment inside the headlamp gearbox. The electric motor rotates the gearbox that drives the bellcrank that actually moves the headlamp bar. The copper segment rotates with the bellcrank. It has cut-out segments that cause the motor to stop at the right spot, and others which enable/disable the headlamp illumination. The signals are sent to/from the electronic relay on green/yellow, white/black and brown/red wires. Possible causes for your problem include: Poor contact between the wipers and copper segment inside the gearbox. Poor connection/broken wire on one of the three wires. Poor connection inside the main fuse panel (terminals N8, N7, N6 or the relay socket). Bad headlamp relay. Wally Plumley 928 Specialists
