Engine Rebuild (first time):

I decided to attempt the engine rebuild myself .  This was an amazing experience for me.  It took almost a year to complete.  This was mainly because it was expensive (about $2500), and I don't have a lot of free time.  Kids will do this!  I met many interesting people along the way and had tons of fun.  Some of the people I met were Harry Pellow and Duane Spencer.  They are both authors.  I used their books  " Secrets of the Inner Circle " by Harry Pellow,  and  " Porsche 356 Performance Handbook "  by Duane Spencer as guides for the rebuild.  I also had help from my friend Graem, who also owns a 912, and a 914, and a 911, and a 928, and a Beck Spyder.  Some people have all the luck.  There is nothing like having an engine ( that you have just rebuilt) start up for the first time!  I was quite pleased....

Here are a few photos of the engine rebuild.

In this first rebuild, I used a NPR Big Bore kit with a 270 degree Web Cam camshaft.  The machine shop work done by Walt Watson of Competition Engineering.  I had the nuts, washers, fuel lines, valve covers, and misc. hardware CAD II plated.  I also cleaned, sandblasted, and painted all the sheet metal.  The engine was then mated to the original 4 speed transmission.

The muffler and heater boxes were painted using a baked on ceramic paint.

It took me a while to tune it properly, but it was not too difficult. The engine then functioned very well.
