My 1980 911 SC FAQs:
Baby on the way.
The windshield leaks a bit on the passenger side when it pours rain.
Top end rebuild/Clutch/Tranny:
New clutch cable, helper spring, new pedals, short shift kit all make it
feel a lot better; transmission gear oil just changed a couple of months
ago; clutch was changed in 1987 (at 110K km) along with top end rebuild, new
head studs, etc. (this was an over $6000 job!). No limited slip.
No leaks. I usually add a quart between oil changes (4K miles)
Great. Especially with the recent addition of new pedals, cables, and helper springs. It's good for a 915 tranny. There is an elusive hot-start condition which happens occasionally. I have spent $1000 last year chasing the problem. It's much better than it was, but it does happen sometimes.
No problem. I have the $200 PPI results from when I purchased the car. Mechanically, I'd say it's in better shape now. The paint certainly hasn't gotten any better, though.
Leak down:
I had Dulles International Motorsport in northern Virginia do their $200
inspection including compression leak down test 2 years ago (Dec 1998) when
I was buying the car from a the previous owner in Centerville, VA. Here are the
results:
1: 2%
2: 2%
3: 3%
4: 4%
5: 2%
6: 2%
Bilstein sports, turbo tie rods, lowered to Euro height (could be lowered a
bit more for my taste, though)
No, I don't think so.
No problem with the rotors, but I have not replaced them. I mounted some
torsion bar brake coolers which help at track events.
Metal Master
ATE Super Blue
BFG Comp TAs (passed inspection, but rears may need replacing within the
next year)
Black, door panels are good, no cracks on dash, good carpet, I'll provide
the stock rear seats and belts. Again, stereo is not great since the
speakers need to be replaced.
No. Not sure when, but someone repainted this car.
Vinyl
No, but it leaks on the passenger side a bit when it pours outside.
Yes. Bubble on passenger side A-pillar. See picture.
No.
