I've got a nice shop with lathe and mill. I can make almost anything
I need. Note that the lathe has a secondary carriage support, in front
of the original bed. I built this because the original compound slide had
only 2" x-axis travel...plus, I designed it to have a motor to drive the
tool. That saves a lot of physical cranking by me and the motor moves the
tool more smoothly than if done by hand. The compound slide that came with
the lathe was not the correct one for the lathe...it was an inch too tall,
so I built spacers for the head stock and tail stock to raise them. In
addition, the 3-jaw chuck that was with the lathe was the same vintage
as the compound slide...I had to fabricate an insert before it would fit
the spindle. It was quite a project, but I learned to appreciate how early
Hardinge lathes were built. The lathe is about the same age as I am...figure
one age out and you know the other one! A clue: it was first sold to a
US Army Ordinance Depot in Chicago prior to WW II... |
