Gas pedal adjustment
Do you have difficulty getting your kickdown switch to engage (automatic transmission)? Your problem may
be that the arm attached to the back of your gas pedal has shifted, making it too short to come into contact with the
button for kickdown. Here's how to adjust that arm.
TOOLS NEEDED:
Needle-nose pliers
10mm socket and wrench
Sorry, but no pictures for this one. To determine whether your kickdown arm isn't long enough, stick your
head under the steering wheel and depress the gas pedal all the way down with your hand. If the kickdown switch
isn't being touched, you need to adjust the pedal. Start by removing the two bolts at the base of the gas pedal
with your 10mm socket and wrench. This frees the pedal for you to turn it around to expose the ball-joint that
actually moves the arm. There is a clip that needs to be pushed up and slid out of the way before the ball can
be removed from the socket. With the pin out of the way, use your pliers to pop the ball out of the socket.
Then use the pliers (it may be loose so the pliers may not be necessary) to turn the "cup" counter-clockwise until
it comes off. Put it back on so that it turns 5 times (just a guess, but I wanted to make sure that enough
of it was threaded on that it wouldn't fall off. Then move the nut (which is separate from the cup piece) down
to where the end of the cup is, and make it snug. Reattach the cup to the ball, reinsert the clip. Replace the
two bolts for the gas pedal. You should have two mounting locations for the pedal. I used the back set. Depress
the gas pedal again, and you should be able to engage the switch now when the pedal is fully depressed.
